Smolensk 1812

The Motherland besieged! Hordes of invaders march on Moscow, but as ever the sons of Russia stand ready to push them back to the Niemen. If Smolensk falls to Napoleon the frenchement will have the way clear to the city of a thousand churches.

Bagration observes from the ramparts the advance of the napoleonic tide
In the east both cavalry forces face off outside the walls
As the french infantry advances
The cavalry charges
Routing the french cuirassiers
The imperials deploy into line before marching into the suburbs of Smolsensk
The victorious cuirassiers wheel around and chase away the guns
The russians start to pour a storm of musketry into the foe
While barclay de Toilly sends some reinforcements from inside the city
The heavy cavalry runs down some reckless poles
As both sides trade shots, the outskirts become a veritable inferno

The cuirassier's last hurrah sees them trample down some guns
The russians suffer heavy losses, but there are always more of them
Finally the imperial artillery comes into canister range and pounds the Mstislav suburb into rubble
The french are not without losses however, and a division is blown away by the bastion guns
The imperials approach the ruined suburb
But as fresh force of ruskis comes out of Smolensk and occupies the ruins
As night arrives the french retreat to lick their wounds
Leaving the victorious garrison to evacuate the ruined city preceded by the holy Virgin of Smolensk

Stay put for the grand finale this week: Borodino
